The year 2021 will be marked by several celebrations related to the life and political heritage of François Mitterrand.

Emmanuel Macron could use this opportunity to appropriate this figure of the left, with which the Socialists have not always been comfortable in recent years.

2020 was the year of De Gaulle, 2021 could be the year of Mitterrand according to the Elysée.

105 years after the birth of the former president, 40 years after his election and 25 years after his death, the socialist could be celebrated on several occasions by Emmanuel Macron, a republican as much as a political step in the run-up to the presidential election .

Friday January 8, Emmanuel Macron will go to meditate in Jarnac, where the former head of state rests.

He will then go to his birthplace which is only 500 meters from the Charente cemetery.

This trip is not without ulterior motives, that of cultivating the political heritage of François Mitterrand, or rather certain facets of the former president of which Emmanuel Macron likes to take advantage.

"There is Jupiter in the two presidents"

According to a minister, Mitterrand and Macron have the same "obsession with the fate of France".

"There is Jupiter in the two presidents," explains a senator, who was close to the two leaders.

According to the Elysee, the two tenants of the Elysee also share a certain vision of the European project: Emmanuel Macron has often taken up Mitterrand's famous phrase: "nationalism is war".

François Mitterrand remains a complex figure in the history of our country, but also of the French left.

"Since Jospin and his inventory right, the Socialists do not really know what to do with it," smiles an advisor to Emmanuel Macron.

This is why the Elysee Palace will take advantage of the celebration of various events around the late president to tease the left, such as October 9, when the 40 years of the abolition of the death penalty will be celebrated.
