January 04, 2021 The maximum interval between the first and second dose of Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine, which is called Comirnaty, is 42 days, according to the EMA.

The European Medicines Agency, which gave the emergency authorization on 21 December, stresses that the maximum interval must be respected in order to have complete protection of the vaccinated.

Evidence on the efficacy of the vaccine is based on a study in which the second dose was administered between 19 and 42 days after the first: EMA notes that full protection occurs seven days after the second dose.

Any change in vaccination times would require a new authorization as well as more data to support this change.

Otherwise, the vaccination would be considered "off-label".

Off-label use reduces manufacturers' responsibilities for vaccine efficacy.
