The "premier" Boris Johnson has announced a new confinement for England, the third since March, given the alarming increase in Covid cases, which exceeded 50,000 a day over the last week.

The "bolt" in England was preceded by similar measures in Scotland, including the temporary closure of schools.

"We have to take new steps to stop this increase and save lives," Johnson declared in a grim television address, in contrast to the optimistic tone used in his New Year's message.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said he attributed the rise in new cases (58,874 Monday) to the new strain detected in southern England and that from South Africa that has also spread across British soil.

The new measures come after an intense struggle by the "premier" with the hard wing of his own party, resistant to new confinements, and the pressure exerted in recent days by the teachers' unions, against the restart of the school year in the situation of alert.

The new confinement in England and Scotland is the hardest since March, with the return to the message of "Stay at home" with the sole exception of trips abroad to make purchases, with a work or exercise permit, and the closure of all "non-essential" businesses.

Chief Minister Nicola Sturgeon advanced several hours and anticipated the lockdown throughout Scotland, "except for essential purposes", starting at midnight Monday.

The "bolt" will be similar to the one that was in force in March, including the temporary closure of schools (which will be reviewed in mid-January).

"I am not exaggerating in saying that I have been more concerned than ever about the situation since March of last year," Sturgeon said.

"Our duty is to act as soon as possible to save lives and protect public health."

Scottish National Party MP Margaret Ferrier, 60, was meanwhile arrested for "reckless conduct" in violating Coronavirus restrictions between September 26 and 29, when she visited a gym and beauty salon and drank twice. the train after developing symptoms of Coronavirus and waiting for the results, which were finally "positive".
