On Monday, criticism of the director general of the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency, MSB, increased.

As the chief of the country's central crisis authority, Dan Eliasson has traveled abroad on holiday in the middle of the pandemic.

This is despite the fact that the recommendations are to refrain from unnecessary travel.

The matter has been further aggravated by the fact that he himself claims that the trip was "necessary", which led to further criticism of him.

However, the opposition in the Riksdag is silent.

Probably because several representatives of other parties similarly stretched the rules and recommendations that apply.

Criticism of Dan Eliasson is instead voiced, above all, by debaters and lead writers.

The government hopes that he will resign voluntarily

Judging by the comment fields on social media, there is also widespread popular anger over Eliasson's actions.

This wave of criticism is likely to force Eliasson out of the post of MSB chief.

The government hopes that he will resign voluntarily.

If he does not do so, the government can reassign him and / or separate him from the assignment at MSB.

The third alternative is that he remains as director general, but then the government must express its confidence in him and right now it does not feel very likely.

In addition, it is difficult to see that Eliasson will be able to act as chief executive of MSB during the continued corona pandemic.

His holiday trip and his comments afterwards have seriously damaged confidence in both Eliasson himself and the authority.

It is therefore difficult to see how Eliasson will be able to repair that damage during the continued pandemic.

Affects the credibility of the councils

MSB is one of the key players in Swedish corona management.

Eliasson's actions affect the credibility of the advice and recommendations issued to the public.

On Thursday or Friday, Minister of the Interior Mikael Damberg (S) will have a meeting with Dan Eliasson to discuss the issue with him.

It could be the beginning to the end of Eliasson's career as MSB chief.

It is difficult to see that Damberg after that meeting can meet the media and the public by giving Eliasson full confidence.

It would probably lead to a new wave of criticism, and this time not only against Eliasson but at least as much against the government.

Disguises the ministers' actions

If a deeply remorseful Dan Eliasson had previously apologized and dressed in sackcloth and ashes, his chances of being allowed to remain would possibly increase, but the question is whether even that would be enough.

Otherwise, Dan Eliasson has completely withdrawn from the public eye since returning from the Canary Islands.

After the famous statement that the trip was "necessary", he has made himself inaccessible.

It has focused on the government and the question of whether it has confidence in its director general.

Eliasson's problem has thus also become the government's.

And in the long run, trust in the government is also at stake in how to handle this issue.

But there are not only negative effects of this for the government.

The attention earlier during the Christmas weekend about Stefan Löfven's tours of the Gallerian in Stockholm and Morgan Johansson's excursion to the midday sale in Lund, for example, has been completely pushed aside from the media's reporting.

Now all attention is instead directed at Dan Eliasson, while the ministers' actions have been overshadowed.

It may be another factor that ultimately seals Eliasson's fate, and which may also give the impression that the government is acting with action.
