Nine British citizens were unable to board British Airways / Iberia Heathrow flights to Madrid and Barcelona last Saturday, one day after Brexit, because the flight personnel did not accept as valid their Foreign Identification Number (NIE) that accredits them as foreign residents in our country, as revealed by The Observer.

The journalist and photographer Max Duncan was among them and he protested openly on the networks.

"British residents in Spain are dismayed that they cannot fly home,"

Duncan wrote on twitter, claiming that flight personnel refused to admit as pre-Brexit green cards amid Covid restrictions.

Duncan himself thanked the British embassy for mediation shortly after, which stressed that the NIE is still valid and that the Spanish authorities have also agreed to it (despite the entry into force of the new Foreigner Identity Card, TIE).

Max Duncan spoke with at least eight Britons held at Heathrow with the same problem, including a couple with a daughter who wanted to fly to Barcelona and who

spent 12 hours at the airport because they did not accept their green card as valid

.

The Spanish Government reported last year that the NIE would be replaced by the TIE card after Brexit.

Tens of thousands of Britons have requested it but many of them do not have it yet due to "overload" in the system.

The British authorities have asked for "greater flexibility" to the Spanish

in the face of complaints expressed by citizens who have not been able to collect the new card.

An estimated 300,000 Britons reside legally in Spain, although the number could be significantly higher.

From January 1, British people traveling to EU countries must have a valid passport for at least six months and stays may not exceed 90 days.
