Mainz (dpa / lrs) - The Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate, Malu Dreyer (SPD), is in favor of a lockdown extended beyond January 10 because of the corona pandemic.

The effects of Christmas and New Year's Eve on the new infections would be visible in a week at the earliest, said the head of government in Mainz on Sunday: "We can therefore not make any easing, but we are still working on how we can restart public life."

She did not comment on details such as the duration of an extension.

According to Dreyer, the aim of the state government is to create planning security for families and security for educators.

That is why the daycare staff can be tested for a corona infection until January 18, without a reason.

In addition, tests will be possible in the future if the educators are classified as contact persons with a lower risk of infection in the event of an outbreak.

"That will also apply to teachers when face-to-face teaching starts again," said the Prime Minister.

It is unclear how things will go on with daycare centers and schools in the long term.

Dreyer pointed out that the state government had already determined before Christmas that there would be distance learning until January 15.

Abitur exams would take place in Rhineland-Palatinate.

The daycare centers remained open to those who would otherwise have no care.

On Tuesday, Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) and the prime ministers of the federal states want to decide on the restrictions on public life due to the corona pandemic.

Like other federal states, Rhineland-Palatinate has been in lockdown since mid-December.

According to information from the German Press Agency, a nationwide extension of the restrictions seems certain - however, the duration and above all the question of what happens to daycare centers and schools is open.
