02 January 2021 The British government has decided that all elementary schools in London will remain closed until 18 January due to the worrying numbers on the spread of Covid-19 in the capital.

But the provision by Education Minister Gavin Williamson, which detractors consider an "embarrassing U-conversion" compared to the previous decision to keep only schools in the areas most at risk closed until 18, is not enough, according to the main union. of British teachers.

The National Education Union (Neu), meeting urgently this morning, is calling for the closure of all schools in England.

Mary Bousted, secretary of NEU, said - reported by the media, including the Guardian - that the government must close all schools in England, modeled on what has been done in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, before the infection goes. "out of control".

"If conditions are allowed to worsen - said Bousted - in the end it will have to close longer".

Approval for the government's measure comes from the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, according to whom the government has "finally made sense and made a U-conversion" on the previous decision, extending the closure to the entire capital.

In Great Britain, there have been over 53,000 new cases and 613 deaths from Covid in the last 24 hours.

The number of victims is one of the highest since last April, after the record recorded in recent days of 981 deaths.
