The Greek government announced on Saturday a new extension until January 10 of the strict confinement imposed on the country for two months, ending the relaxation of measures tolerated for the end of the year holidays.

Initially scheduled to end on January 7, "the strict measures will start again on Sunday and until January 10 for preventive reasons," Greek government spokesman Stelios Petsas said in a broadcast message.

The aim is not to make the situation worse so that schools can reopen on January 11, he said.

The epidemiological situation of the country "will be assessed again during the second week of January before the announcement of new recommendations concerning economic and social activity," added the spokesperson.

A brutal second wave

Strict containment, accompanied by a night curfew, to stem the second wave of the Covid-19 epidemic in the country - much more virulent than that of spring -, had been adopted on November 7, before being extended for the first time in early December for one month.

However, in anticipation of Christmas, the government relaxed these measures in the second week of December by allowing the opening of hairdressing salons, churches with a limited number of worshipers and shops with the "click-and-" system. collect ”.
