A dozen autonomous communities debut this 2021 with warnings for risk (yellow) or important risk (orange) due to snowfall, cold, avalanches or coastal phenomena, as reported by the

State Meteorological Agency (AEMET)

.

Specifically, the Principality of Asturias and Cantabria will have a significant risk of snowfall on January 1, which depending on the areas may accumulate 5 to 20 centimeters thick.

In addition, the provinces of Lugo, Orense, Zamora, León, Palencia, Burgos, Soria, Segovia, Ávila, La Rioja, Álava, Vizcaya, Guipúzcoa, Navarra, Teruel, Lérida, Barcelona, Gerona will also have risk but with a yellow warning for snow , Tarragona, Albacete, Cuenca, Jaén and Granada, where the snow thickness oscillations range between 2 and 18 centimeters of snow.

Another of the meteorological risks associated with snow will be avalanches

, which this Friday will put mountain areas at risk, from 2,000 meters from Navarra, Huesca and Lérida.

Due to minimum temperatures, the provinces of Huesca, Gerona, Lleida, Barcelona and Teruel will have a yellow warning, which may drop from -4 degrees centigrade to -7 degrees centigrade.

At the same time, the strong wind will blow with gusts of up to 70 kilometers per hour in Almería and Granada, while coastal phenomena will also affect these two provinces, where waves of 3 meters can be registered, as in the autonomous city of Melilla.

Likewise,

the strong waves will have a risk warning to the coasts of Asturias, Cantabria, Vizcaya and Guipúzcoa

, where they expect a strong west or northwest wind 7.

In general, this Friday the rainfall will be persistent in the Cantabrian Sea and possibly will be strong in the northeast of the Balearic Islands and the AEMET expects significant snowfalls in the interior of the extreme north of the peninsula, and in high areas of the center and southeast of the peninsula.

Storms in the north

During the first day of 2021, the front will continue to advance towards the south and east and the skies will be practically covered in the north of Galicia and the Cantabrian Sea, with rainfall that will be accompanied by occasional storms.

These showers will be persistent and locally intense in the Cantabrian Sea and will also be probable in the rest of the extreme north of the peninsula.

In the center of the country, the southern half and the Mediterranean area, the skies will be cloudy, with weak rains and occasional showers on both plateaus, Andalusia, northeast Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, Melilla and the Strait, which may be accompanied by storms and may even be locally strong in Mallorca and Menorca.

However, rainfall will tend to subside in most areas

.

As for the Canary Islands, the AEMET has predicted that it will be left out of this situation and although it will have cloudy skies or with cloudy intervals, a low probability of rain is expected and only on the islands of greater relief.

In the rest of the country, slightly cloudy skies are expected with intervals.

Snowfall

The snow level will be located in the southeast of the Peninsula between 900 and 1,200 meters although it will drop to 500 to 700 meters.

In the rest it will go down until it reaches 400 or 600 meters in height, while in the Balearic Islands it will snow from 800 meters.

Regarding temperatures, a general decrease is expected that will affect the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands until they reach lower values than usual for these dates.

However, the lows will rise in the southern half.

Thus, the AEMET foresees frosts in most of the interior, except the southwest quadrant and lower Ebro, which will be more intense in the northern plateau and mountain areas and will be strong in the Pyrenees.

In the Canary Islands little changes are expected.

Finally, the AEMET explains that northwesterly winds will prevail in the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, with strong intervals on the Cantabrian coast and Alboran, leaving the Ebro and Menorca.

Trade winds will blow in the Canary Islands.
