Hanover / Bremen (dpa / lni) - The turn of the year was much quieter than usual in numerous cities in Lower Saxony and in Bremen.

In the evening and until after midnight there were significantly fewer deployments in Hanover, Göttingen, Braunschweig, Osnabrück, Oldenburg and in the city of Bremen than in previous years, as the local police stations reported.

"It's much quieter than usual," said a police spokesman in Hanover at 1 o'clock in the morning.

"There is next to nothing going on in the city center."

There were therefore no major missions.

A police officer on duty in Braunschweig made a similar statement.

"It's a very quiet night," he said.

An official in Göttingen said most people obeyed the rules.

"We can be very satisfied."

All in all, New Year's Eve is much quieter than in previous years ».

In Oldenburg, too, the police registered significantly fewer incidents than in previous years.

There were no typical New Year's Eve missions, for example because of fights at parties, it said.

"It's much less busy than in previous years," said a police officer after midnight.

In Osnabrück, the officials also had the impression that most people adhered to the Corona rules.

There were no major missions there until shortly after midnight.

The police had a different impression for Salzgitter, Peine and Wolfenbüttel.

An officer on duty said there were as many missions as in previous years.

But there were no major incidents in the region either.

In order to contain the spread of the corona virus, a maximum of five people from two households and children under the age of 14 were allowed to meet on New Year's Eve.

Fireworks were not allowed to be sold, and lighting was forbidden in many places.

Police and politicians had called on people to stick to the rules and celebrate a quiet New Year's Eve in a small group.

The police had announced that they would consistently punish violations of the corona rules.
