Frankfurt / Main (dpa) - The diaries are fuller than ever.

After the Corona crisis paralyzed global professional sport for months in the spring, the associations and organizers now want to do everything they can to catch up on what they missed in the 2020 epidemic year.

In the summer of 2021, the pan-European football championship, the Wimbledon tennis tournament, the Tour de France and the Tokyo Olympic Games are to take place in direct succession.

The question that hovers over everything: Is a scheduled staging possible this time despite Corona?

The onset of the pandemic had shaken the sports calendar vigorously and for a long time.

After the relocation of the Olympics and European Championships in March, numerous other sporting events had to be postponed in order to avoid duplication in summer 2021.

Active athletes and fans can now expect two consecutive years of super sports, each with the Olympics and a major football event.

While there is a lot going on in the summer of 2021, the following year the big highlights with the winter games in Beijing (February 2022) and the World Cup in Qatar (November and December 2022) will take place in winter.

For the next year, the organizers have started the bitter fight against time.

The new corona infections skyrocketed again in the autumn months, many return concepts for spectators in stadiums are back in the drawers after a corresponding ban by politics.

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin wants to stick to the EM plan with twelve arenas spread across Europe so far.

The umbrella organization quickly denied the corresponding rumors that the tournament, like the 2018 World Cup, could only take place in Russia.

Instead, the European Football Union deals with four different spectator scenarios, ranging from full capacity to ghost games.

In view of the past few months, it is relatively certain that a European football championship can be played in the summer of 2021.

On March 5th, a definitive regulation is to be made as to how many spectators at the venues are allowed to enter the individual EM stadiums.

Then UEFA wants to determine at which of the twelve venues which scenario is used.

The specification for the twelve venues should then be binding.

The DFB team, which was badly shaken at the 0: 6 in Spain, meets France, Portugal and Hungary in the preliminary round.

The three group games are scheduled in Munich.

Thomas Bach and his IOC are expecting an even more difficult task than Ceferin and UEFA.

Not only 24 soccer teams, but around 11,000 athletes from all over the world compete in the Olympic Games.

The IOC's great hope is a vaccine against the coronavirus that could be widely available by next summer.

The IOC will make "great efforts" to ensure that as many participants and fans as possible are vaccinated against the corona virus before the trip to Japan next year, said Bach.

“We do this out of respect for the Japanese people.

You should be sure that everything is done to host safe games in Tokyo, ”said the IOC chief.

However, Bach ruled out compulsory vaccination.

It is still completely uncertain whether and how many fans will be able to attend the largest sports festival in the world.

Bach and the IOC, which were sharply criticized in the spring for the late cancellation of the games, are longing for a signal that international sport could send out worldwide in the current crisis situation.

"Together we can make these Olympic Games and the Olympic flame a light at the end of the tunnel," announced Bach.

In addition to the Olympics and the European Championship, 23 Formula 1 races, the return of the Wimbledon tournament after a one-year Corona break and the Tour de France starting in Brittany are on the program.

Germany will host a major event in the spring: the Nordic World Ski Championships are to take place in Oberstdorf from February 23 to March 7.

The organizers in the Allgäu are currently planning with 2500 spectators, but also have to fear ghost competitions.

After all: the concern that the event will be completely canceled at short notice is "low", emphasized the President of the Ski Association, Franz Steinle.
