A timid wind of optimism is blowing in the editorials of this Friday, January 1, 2021. And this while the year 2020 does not seem to want to let us go so quickly, it is even "
stuck like chewing gum to our sneakers
", notes the
Washington Post
which continues: “
The coronavirus pandemic will get worse before it gets better.
Under the hood of the global economy we can hear funny noises.
The stock market is as sparkling as cheap champagne, full of bubbles that threaten to burst.
Not to mention the president who continues to stamp his foot to ask that we play extra time while the football field is empty and the stadium around deserted.
And yet,
"predicts the
Washington Post
,"
the story that 2021 will tell will give reasons for hope
”.
The mere possibility that Twitter could suspend Donald Trump's account as soon as he leaves the White House on January 20 is enough to fill the
New York Times
columnist with joy
.
But it is obviously the vaccine against Covid-19 that concentrates the hopes of the press on the continent.
"
We also know who we are and the form that our hope takes
," said the columnist of the Peruvian newspaper
El Comercio
in this regard
.
“
In other times, religion brought consolation and comfort.
Today, it is science that has taken this place
”
, rejoices the daily.
“
Highlighted by the media around the world, doctors, epidemiologists and public health experts have become our guides to get through this crisis
”.
Expectations for the New Year
The
Houston Chronicle
columnist
wants more than anything that his children can find their playmates.
“
Real children, whose facial expression is not frozen by a capricious internet connection.
I can't wait to hear their cries of joy in the garden again,
”writes the journalist,“
with their laughter as the only potentially contagious thing
”.
Le
Journal de Montréal
would like us to make 2021 “
the year of the reconquest of freedom of expression
”.
The Oklahoman
newspaper
wants to see more “
civic responsibility
”.
In Jamaica, the
Jamaica Gleaner
writes: “
We want less corruption in the public service
”.
And in Haiti, where insecurity is raging, the editorial
writer
for the
National
writes with disconcerting simplicity: “
the best we want is to stay alive
”.
For the Colombian newspaper
El Espectador
there is no doubt: “
The resilience that citizens are demonstrating in these difficult times must be accompanied by ambition.
Because it is necessary to strengthen institutions, improve education, facilitate political participation and consolidate solidarity and living together
”.
For these expectations to come true there is no miracle recipe. "
Do not wait for the best days to get down to work,
" advises Frantz Duval of the Haitian newspaper
Le Nouvelliste
.
"
Give the best of you in everything every day
".
