Hamburg (dpa / lno) - An 80-year-old man was seriously injured in an apartment fire in an apartment building on New Year's Eve in Hamburg-Winterhude.
His 78-year-old wife was also taken to hospital on suspicion of smoke inhalation, a police spokesman said on Friday.
For an initially unknown cause, the Christmas tree in the couple's apartment caught fire.
The 80-year-old suffered severe burns to his head and thighs.
The apartment was initially not habitable after the extinguishing work was completed.
However, the other residents of the house were able to return to their apartments.
