Coronavirus, of course, but also Brexit, economy and an unprecedented tribute to the French.

On the occasion of the presidential greetings, Emmanuel Macron gave a speech of about 15 minutes in an attempt to restore hope to the population in a context that is at least gloomy.

Here is what to remember from the speech of the President of the Republic.

THE ESSENTIAL

The coronavirus epidemic held a good place during Emmanuel Macron's speech, Thursday evening at 8 p.m.

During his greetings to the French, a tradition which occurs in such a special context this year, the President of the Republic notably mentioned the vaccine but also the Brexit news or the economic outlook for the coming year.

Europe 1 summarizes the great moments of the speech of the Head of State.

Vaccine: avoid "unjustified slowness"

"I will not let unjustified slowness take hold," hammered Emmanuel Macron.

Visibly scalded by the critics on the supposed slowness of the vaccination campaign in France, he wanted to reassure.

He also said that he would not let "anyone play with safety and the good conditions, supervised by our scientists and our doctors, in which the vaccination must be done".

Earlier in the day, the Minister of Health Olivier Véran had announced that the vaccination would be open to caregivers aged 50 and over "from Monday".

Despite Brexit, a united Europe

Surprisingly, the mention of the divorce between the UK and the EU-27 came very early in his speech.

The president called the United Kingdom a friend and ally, despite this departure decided in a referendum four years ago.

"This choice to leave Europe, this Brexit, was the child of the European malaise and of many lies and false promises", declared the head of state.

At the same time, Emmanuel Macron again presented himself as a convinced Europeanist, listing the successes of cooperation, including the adoption of a European recovery plan.

"Our destiny is first of all in Europe, our sovereignty is national […] but this sovereignty also involves a stronger, more autonomous, more united Europe."

Anonymous in the spotlight

Unprecedented moment for these New Year's greetings: Emmanuel Macron paid tribute to the French ... by listing the names and backgrounds of anonymous, all affected to varying degrees by the epidemic and its consequences.

The viewers thus had a brief overview of the daily life of "Jean-Luc, garbage collector in Guyana", of "Gérald, entrepreneur in Angers" or "Marie-Corentine, 24 years old, newly graduated nurse".

A way for the Head of State to salute the sense of sacrifice of all French people during the past year.

The Head of State also greeted the footballer of the French team and the Olympique Lyonnais Wendie Renard, who "drew the strength of soul to go and win his club always a seventh Champions League, a record".

The promises of an economic recovery

From entrepreneurs to the youngest worried about their future, concern about the state of the French economy was raised by Emmanuel Macron, who insisted on the promises of a recovery.

The 2021 revival "will allow us, from the spring, to invent a stronger economy", he declared.

The French economy must be "at the same time creating jobs, more innovative, more respectful of the climate and biodiversity and more united", added the Head of State, affirming that "there is hope" .
