The
Holy See
has decreed the extension of the
Holy Year 2021
throughout the year 2022 due to the exceptional circumstances surrounding its celebration due to the
covid-19
pandemic
.
This was announced by the Apostolic Nuncio for Spain,
Bernardito Auza
, at the conclusion of the Eucharist with which the opening of the
Holy Door
ended
, just before the flight of the botafumeiro began.
Auza has taken the floor to read a decree of the apostolic penitentiary, dated at the beginning of this month of December, in which, taking into account the difficult circumstances that are experienced around the world by the covid-19 pandemic , the Pope agrees to extend the spiritual gifts linked to the Holy Year throughout 2022.
After receiving the news, the Archbishop of Compostela,
Julián Barrio
, expressed his "deep gratitude" for "this grace" granted by the Holy Father, which, he explained, will bring joy to "so many pilgrims" who along these two years will come before the tomb of the Apostle and will be able to enter through the Holy Door.
