The landslide in Gjerdrum, Norway, occurred early on Wednesday morning and the search for survivors continues.

More than 1,000 people have been evacuated from their homes.

Already several years ago, according to NRK, warnings about erosion problems in the area came from, among others, the hydrologist Steinar Myrabø, who was then chief engineer at the Norwegian National Rail Administration.

"Offered help"

In an interview with NRK, the hydrologist Steinar Myrabø says that he has long been worried that this would happen and that he warned the municipality already in 2008.

- I warned the municipality that there could be erosion and that the whole area could collapse, he says to NRK

- I meant that you could not build more there until you had a plan for the future.

"Done what we should do"

Mayor Anders Østensen tells NRK that it is too early to comment, but that experts have been consulted earlier and that it should have gone right.

- We are pretty sure that we have done what we are supposed to do, he says to NRK.
