Lübeck (dpa / lno) - After the violent death of a 38-year-old man on Wednesday in Lübeck, a suspect was arrested.

The 57-year-old is said to have shot the man after he entered a house, as the public prosecutor and police announced on New Year's Eve.

The 57-year-old is being investigated for manslaughter.

According to the findings of the investigators so far, the 38-year-old had entered the apparently empty building with a friend early Wednesday morning through a basement window, but was surprised by the 57-year-old on the second floor.

"This frightened the intruders, who then fled," it said.

The 57-year-old apparently followed the two.

While the companion of the 38-year-old managed to escape unscathed, the victim was struck down with three shots in the back from a sharp weapon.

Neighbors found the seriously injured man on the street and alerted the rescue workers.

The victim died a little later in the hospital.

When the police searched the house that evening, officials found the 57-year-old on the roof, where he was arrested without resistance.

A pistol was lying next to him.

Two more firearms - a revolver and a long gun - were found in the house.

The man had the necessary gun license for all three weapons.

However, the officers also found boxes of ammunition and - when they returned on Thursday with experts from the ordnance disposal service - another hand grenade.

The accused should be brought before the judge on New Year's Eve.

At first he did not comment on the charge.
