December 31, 2020 - Microsoft acknowledged that hackers who attacked government and private computer networks on December 14 gained access to its internal 'source code', the heart of its software.

The attack was attributed by top US officials to Russian hackers, but, the American giant points out, the hackers have not been able to compromise or modify any of the software.

The flaw was identified in SolarWinds' Orion platform, which is used for network management and monitoring.

"We detected an unusual activity with a small number of internal accounts, and upon reviewing it, we found that one account had been used to view source code in a number of source code repositories," the company said in a blog post.

The company previously acknowledged that it inadvertently downloaded a software patch used by Russian cyberspies as a potential "back door" into victims' systems.

But it was not known that the hackers had seen the company's source code, or the DNA of the proprietary software.
