December 31, 2020 In mid-December 2019, health authorities in Wuhan, the seventh largest city in China, capital of Hubei province, found the first cases of patients showing symptoms of "pneumonia of unknown cause": this first group of patients was somehow connected to the local wet market, where, among others, wild animals are sold.

On December 31, Wuhan health authorities report the first case attributable to the new virus, from animal sources.

The following day, they order the closure of the market and the isolation of those with symptoms of the contagion.

The new coronavirus will meanwhile be renamed 2019-nCoV.

The 'mysterious pneumonia'

The debate on the origin and chronology of events has not ended, but the first official alarm, the WHO itself remembers on its website, dates back to 31 December, when the Geneva organization was informed by the Chinese authorities of "cases of pneumonia of unknown etiology (cause unknown) found in Wuhan city, Hubei province of China ".

Twelve months later, 82 million infections have been exceeded worldwide, with over 1.8 million deaths.

From the mysterious virus to the pandemic

The Covid-19 epidemic has shocked every corner of the planet with a strong impact on the economy and profound changes in habits and attitudes.

Three days after the official communication to the WHO, 44 patients were reported in China, 11 of whom were seriously ill.

Symptoms were mainly fever, some also had difficulty breathing and radiographs showing "invasive lesions in both lungs".

Some patients were linked to the Huanan fish market while the Wuhan one was closed on January 1 for disinfection and environmental sanitation.

Meanwhile, the epidemic is spreading around the world.

On 11 January 2020 the first victim in China of a new coronavirus is confirmed and on 13 January the first death occurs outside the border, in Thailand.

On January 21, the US health authorities confirmed the first case in the US: it is a 30-year-old returning from Wuhan.

Since January 23, the Chinese government has quarantined the city of Wuhan and subsequently expands the provision to almost the entire province of Hubei.

The victims had reached 100.

Coronavirus dominates Europe

The virus arrives in Europe on January 24 with 3 isolated cases in France (Bordeaux and Paris).

In the meantime, there are new cases of contagion outside of China: in Hong Kong, Macao, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam and Nepal.

At the end of the month, the WHO declares the epidemic of the new coronavirus "public health emergency of international interest", while the first two cases in Italy are confirmed: two tourists from China test positive for the virus in Rome.

Italy closes air traffic to and from China.

The pandemic and infections in Italy

Between 21 and 22 February the first infections in Italy related to Covid-19 are recorded: a 30-year-old patient is hospitalized in the intensive care unit of the Codogno hospital (Lodi) and other outbreaks are recorded in Veneto.

From 10 March the whole of Italy becomes the 'red zone': it is the beginning of the lockdown and, the following day, 11 March, the WHO declares that the one caused by the Sars-CoV-2 virus is a pandemic.

There are over 165 countries in the world where infections are recorded

The hope of the vaccine

December 8 is another historic date: the day of the first administration of a vaccine (that of Pfizer-BioNtech) against the new coronavirus.

On December 27, less than a year after the notification of the 'atypical pandemic', throughout Europe, is Vax Day, the day in which the first doses of Pfizer-BioNTech's anti-Covid vaccine are administered.

The infected around the world, to refer to that date, are over 81 million, the dead almost 1.8 million.
