Bergen (dpa / mv) - After a failed overtaking maneuver on the island of Rügen, the van of a 61-year-old rolled over and fell into the water.

The driver was "miraculously" unharmed except for "slight wounds," said the police on Thursday evening.

A 24-year-old from Stralsund overtook him with his car on a bridge on the main road towards Sagard and then collided with the rear axle of the car.

Due to the impact, the 61-year-old's van rolled over in the afternoon and fell into the water of the Great Jasmunder Bodden.

Rescue workers retrieved the man from the water and he was taken to the hospital.

The street was blocked at times.

The accident made it clear that the 61-year-old from Templin (Brandenburg) was not even allowed to be in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The police officers recorded an administrative offense report.
