Berlin (dpa) - After the decision for a higher climate protection target for the European Union, the Bundestag CSU also wants to sharpen the German target of greenhouse gas reduction.

"On the basis of the new European climate target, we are campaigning for an ambitious German climate target of 60 percent," says a draft resolution for the CSU regional group's winter retreat at the beginning of January, from which the "Passauer Neue Presse" (Thursday) quoted.

"We have a clear claim to be pioneers in climate protection."

Germany's current target is 55 percent less CO2 emissions by 2030, compared to 1990, the same year. The EU-wide target was raised from 40 to 55 percent in December. Green boss Robert Habeck then recently called for Germany to raise the target to at least 65 percent greenhouse gas reduction by 2030.
