The US site, Axios, reported that officials of the administration, President Donald Trump, have declassified initial intelligence information stating that China has offered financial rewards to non-governmental organizations in Afghanistan for attacking American soldiers.

He added - in a lengthy report to him - that National Security Adviser Robert O'Brien informed the president orally of the bonus information, during a security briefing in mid-December.

Sources were quoted as saying that officials from the administration met on the 22nd of this month to discuss the protection of the remaining American soldiers in Afghanistan.

The officials did not disclose the source of the information, nor the time period in which the Chinese bonuses were paid, according to the American account.

Axios said that officials from various US intelligence agencies are working on documenting this initial information.

A senior official was quoted as saying that these initial reports about China's supposed involvement in inciting the targeting of American soldiers in Afghanistan are being treated with caution.

Increasing pressure

Axios said that the disclosure of this intelligence comes after the outgoing US President’s pledge to increase pressure on China.

He added that it is unlikely that Trump raised this issue with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, noting that it was not clear whether the President-elect (Joe Biden) or members of Congress had been informed of this information.

The American news site also said that the declassification of this information regarding the supposed Chinese rewards comes months after US officials accused Russia of offering financial rewards to Taliban-linked fighters for killing American soldiers in Afghanistan, which Moscow and the Taliban cited.

And US administration officials had questioned the validity of media reports about the Russian bonuses.

Besides Russia and China, US intelligence reported that Iran had also offered similar rewards to Taliban fighters for killing American soldiers and other NATO forces in Afghanistan, as US media reported earlier.
