Berlin (dpa) - The German health authorities have reported 32,552 new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) within 24 hours.

In addition, 964 new deaths were recorded, as the RKI announced on Thursday morning.

However, the figures are only partially comparable with the values of the previous week.

The RKI had expected a lower number of tests and fewer reports from the health authorities over the Christmas period.

From the RKI's point of view, the currently high numbers are therefore also due to late registrations.

A week ago there were 32,195 new infections and 802 new deaths within one day.

The number of new infections reported to the health authorities within seven days per 100,000 inhabitants (seven-day incidence) was 139.8 on Thursday morning.

Its previous high was reached on December 22nd at 197.6.

However, the differences between the federal states are enormous: The highest incidences on Thursday were Saxony with 326.7 and Thuringia with 246.5, Schleswig-Holstein had the lowest with 77.1.

The RKI has counted 1,719,737 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic (as of December 31, 00:00).

The total number of people who died with or with the involvement of a proven infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 33 071. The RKI stated the number of people who had recovered at around 1,328,200.

According to the RKI report on Wednesday, the nationwide seven-day R value was 0.68 (Tuesday: 0.67).

This R value means that 100 infected people theoretically infect 68 more people.

The value represents the occurrence of the infection 8 to 16 days ago.

If it is below 1 for a long time, the infection process subsides.

In its report, however, the RKI emphasizes that at the turn of the year, corona cases are only displayed, recorded and transmitted with a delay, “so that the R value may also be underestimated”.
