Wiesbaden (dpa / lhe) - With the start of the federal motorway company at the beginning of the year, a number of employees of the Hessen Mobil transport authority switched to the new Autobahn GmbH.

After many decades of order management by the federal states, the federal government is now taking full responsibility for its motorways, said Transport Minister Tarek Al-Wazir (Greens) in Wiesbaden on Wednesday.

"This not only ends an era, but also begins a new era for our Hessen Mobil road construction administration."

According to the minister, more than 900 of the approximately 3,500 employees of Hessen Mobil and the State of Hessen are moving to Autobahn GmbH and the newly created Federal Highway Authority.

So far, the state had planned, built and operated the highways in Hesse under contract management.

However, it is still responsible for the planning approval procedures that are required for larger projects.

Al-Wazir emphasized that Hessen had set clear priorities in the implementation of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan in recent years.

In the motorway area, the state has concentrated on the most important renovation and conversion projects for traffic flow and road safety, such as motorway junctions and motorway bridges.

"I very much hope that the federal government will continue this line."

The new Autobahn GmbH will start operations at the beginning of 2021 and will then take care of the 13,000-kilometer network of German motorways.

Motorways run through Hesse over a length of around 1000 kilometers.

So far, the federal government has given the money as the owner, while the states are responsible for planning, construction and operation.

The aim of the new structure is to plan and build faster in the future.

Hessen Mobil will remain responsible for federal, state and district roads and will also take on other tasks, explained the Green politician.

Modes of transport could no longer be viewed and managed in isolation.

Therefore, at the start of the new year, the traffic authority is getting a new department for topics such as rail traffic, public transport, network concepts, cycling, local mobility and traffic safety.
