The president of the European Commission,

Ursula von der Leyen

, and the president of the European Council,

Charles Michel,

signed on Wednesday the three treaties that will regulate the relationship between the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom from this Friday.

The signing comes after both parties reached an agreement 'in extremis' on Christmas Eve on their ties after Brexit, after a few months of agonizing negotiations.

Today the

Trade and Cooperation Agreement between the EU and the European Atomic Energy Community

(Euratom), on the one hand, and the United Kingdom, on the other, will

be initialed

;

the agreement on security procedures for exchanging and protecting classified information between the EU and the United Kingdom, and the agreement for

Cooperation for the Safe and Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy

, between Euratom and the United Kingdom.

Each agreement will be signed in two copies, first in Brussels by Von der Leyen and Michel -except for the third, which will only be signed by the President of the EC on behalf of Euratom-, and then in London by the British "premier",

Boris Johnson

.
