After two months of detention in an undisclosed place, Pascal Affi N'Guessan will therefore be able to return home.
The FPI president was
arrested in early November
, a few days after the presidential election, near the town of Akoupé, 140 kilometers from Abidjan.
He was trying to reach his stronghold of Bongouanou.
He was wanted on charges of attacks and conspiracy against state authority in particular.
The head of the FPI, also spokesperson for the opposition coalition, was arrested following the creation by power's opponents of a National Transitional Council (CNT) to protest against the re-election of President Alassane Ouattara to a third term.
This initiative had been judged as insurrectional by the government which had identified this CNT as a parallel and illegal government.
Still under judicial control
It was at the end of his summons by the examining magistrate that his release was decided.
Mr. Affi N'Guessan still remains under judicial control with around thirty charges still hanging against him.
The Secretary General of the FPI, Issiaka Sangaré, welcomes this release which constitutes "the
beginning of the beginning towards political appeasement
".
This appeasement was triggered on December 21 by a dialogue between the government and the opposition forces which ended on Tuesday, December 29.
The release of political leaders is still part of the demands of opponents.
For the moment, the Secretary General of FPI-Legal does not yet know to what extent its president will be free to exercise his political activities when the legislative elections have just been
set for March 6, 2020
.
