Schwerin (dpa / mv) - Around 22,000 households in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania received housing benefit this year.

This was ten percent more than in the previous year, as Building Minister Christian Ebene (SPD) said in Schwerin on Wednesday.

The amount of housing benefit paid rose even more sharply.

A total of almost 37 million euros was paid, 7 million euros or 24 percent more than in 2019. According to the Federal Statistical Office, there were around 837,000 households in MV at the end of 2019.

The share of private households receiving housing benefit was 2.4 percent.

There are two reasons for this increase: The housing benefit has been increased as well as the income limits.

More people could benefit from the support, which is half financed by the federal government and half by the state.

“The housing benefit helps secure housing costs financially during the corona pandemic.

In this way, people who had to go on short-time work can cushion a loss of income, ”said level.

Housing benefits play an important role in social peace.

At the beginning of 2021, the housing benefit will be increased again: With the start of CO2 pricing for fossil fuels, a new CO2 component in the housing benefit will relieve households of heating costs.

For a two-person household, the housing benefit increases by an average of around twelve euros per month.
