Offenbach (dpa / lsw) - According to preliminary results, Baden-Württemberg was the sunniest region in Germany in 2020.

The country recorded almost 2053 hours of sunshine - 152 more than the national average, as the German Weather Service (DWD) announced on Wednesday in Offenbach after initial evaluations.

On the other hand, it wasn't particularly warm in the southwest.

The average temperature was therefore 10.4 degrees Celsius and thus just as high as the national average.

In Saarland and North Rhine-Westphalia, for example, it was warmer with an average of 11.4 and 11.1 degrees Celsius respectively.

Nevertheless: In Baden-Württemberg, too, the temperature was on average 2.3 degrees higher than the average between 1961 and 1990, which form the internationally valid reference period.

Overall, according to the preliminary results, the year 2020 was the second warmest year in Germany since the beginning of nationwide weather records in 1881.

In Baden-Württemberg, 2020 began on the third sunniest January since measurements began in 1951, the DWD said.

In February it became unusually warm.

On February 16, for example, early summer temperatures of sometimes over 20 degrees were measured.

Many will surely remember the low storm «Sabine», which caused severe gusts of wind and gale force on February 10th.

According to the DWD, the first meteorological summer day in the country was on April 17, when daily highs of over 25 degrees were measured.

A heat wave hit the people of Baden-Württemberg at the end of July when temperatures rose above 35 degrees Celsius in many places, in Rheinfelden on the Swiss border on July 31, even to an “extremely hot” 38.5 degrees Celsius, as the DWD announced.

Even in September it remained summery.

After all, November was the second sunniest since measurements began.

Compared to other regions, the year in Baden-Württemberg was quite wet.
