Hamburg (dpa / lno) - A year ago, tens of thousands of people in Hamburg's city center celebrated the year 2020.

The traditional New Year's fireworks at the Landungsbrücken were not only followed by Hamburg residents, but also by countless tourists.

The new year 2021 will definitely be different because of the corona pandemic.

"Even if many may find it difficult to give up their New Year's Eve traditions, we would like to ask everyone to abide by the rules," emphasized a spokeswoman for the Hamburg Senate.

According to the Senate press office, the sale and ignition of fireworks are generally prohibited this year.

“Only small fireworks such as sparklers or table fireworks are allowed,” added the spokeswoman.

According to the current containment ordinance, this does not only apply in public places, but also in your own garden or on the balcony.

If, as an exception, several people from a family could meet at Christmas, harder rules apply again in Hamburg on New Year's Eve: According to the authorities, up to five people from two households can celebrate New Year's Eve.

Children up to 14 years are not counted.

Furthermore, it is important to avoid unnecessary private meetings and to reduce contacts, as the spokeswoman emphasized.

Even if everyone present can keep the required distances, according to the Corona Containment Ordinance, gatherings in public places are prohibited on December 31st and January 1st.

Accordingly, alcohol must not be drunk on streets, squares and green spaces.

It should not be forgotten that in many public places such as the Reeperbahn or on Alma-Wartenberg-Platz in the Altona district, you are required to wear a face-to-face mask.

Despite the nationwide Corona shutdown, relatives of Hamburgers were able to stay in hotels at Christmas.

The Senate spokeswoman emphasized that this no longer applies to the turn of the year.

Originally, hotel stays were to be allowed for family visits from December 23rd to January 1st.

"It has been evident for some time that there will be no opening until the New Year," said Niklaus Kaiser von Rosenburg from the German Hotel and Restaurant Association (Dehoga).

This year, too, the holidays will be very busy for the Hamburg police, as a police spokesman for the German press agency said.

In order to ensure compliance with the Corona Containment Ordinance, there will be increased presence in many places.

"But we will not go from house to house without suspicion," said the police spokesman.

However, should a neighbor point out an illegal New Year's Eve party, the officials would resolutely break the celebration.

Until that happens, however, the police are appealing to the minds and sense of responsibility of the people of Hamburg.

"It is about further containing the corona virus and restricting contacts," said the Senate spokeswoman.

New Year's Eve 2020 will therefore be different for many Hamburg residents than in previous years.
