Berlin (dpa / bb) - The Berlin Senate has missed its goals in building social housing for people with low or middle incomes.

In the course of the 2019/2020 funding program, 5800 such apartments will be built in 93 projects, as Urban Development Senator Sebastian Scheel (Linke) announced on Tuesday.

The state of Berlin provided 522 million euros for this.

Originally, the red-red-green Senate had planned 8,500 new social housing for this funding period.

With the new apartments, Berlin is expanding the offer for tenants with a housing entitlement certificate (WBS), explained Scheel.

«That is an important step in the right direction.

Nevertheless, it is painful that we have not been able to achieve our ambitious goal of 8,500 apartments. "

Scheel named obstacles to the new building such as environmental protection requirements or increased construction costs as reasons.

In addition, there is the corona pandemic, as a result of which fewer staff are working in the approval authorities of the districts.

As a result, development planning procedures were delayed and the required public participation could not be implemented.

At the same time, fewer building permits were processed.

After completion, four out of five new apartments will be rented to WBS owners in the so-called subsidy model 1 at a net rent of EUR 6.60 per square meter.

The remaining apartments are to be offered for households with medium incomes and WBS from EUR 8.20 per square meter.

The six municipal housing associations create the lion's share of social housing.

Around 92 percent of all permits relate to construction projects by these companies.
