Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - In the new year, commuters and truck drivers in particular will have to struggle with numerous permanent construction sites in the North Rhine-Westphalian motorway network.

The new construction and repair of ailing bridges remain the main cause of bottlenecks with slow-moving traffic.

This is based on calculations by the traffic center of the Landesbetrieb Straßen.NRW for the German press agency in Düsseldorf.

As in previous years, the biggest bottleneck is to be expected between the Volmarstein junction and the Dortmund / Unna motorway junction.

Of the ten worst-loaded traffic jams on a total of 2200 kilometers of autobahn in North Rhine-Westphalia, six sections of the Ruhr area are affected.

Around Essen, Bochum, Recklinghausen, drivers encounter well-known problematic routes, but also in the Rhineland, for example around the dilapidated Leverkusen bridge.

The ADAC expects plenty of traffic jams in NRW for the new year.

According to his recently published list, several permanent construction sites in a row could slow down traffic in 2021.

These include construction sites on the A1 Hagen - Cologne, on the A1 / A46 around the Hilden junction, on the A3 between the Dutch border and Bottrop, on the A45 Hagen - Gießen and on the A40 in the Ruhr area.

On the A40 from Essen to Duisburg alone, the ADAC counted a total of 6,470 traffic jams in 2020.

At best, the corona crisis could bring some relief to the highways.

At least in 2020, the Landesbetrieb Straßen.NRW recorded fewer traffic jams as a result of lower traffic volumes - especially during the first lockdown in spring.

The NRW Ministry of Transport does not want to disregard the perspective despite all the annoyance about traffic jams: "Wherever there is construction, it will of course soon be better," said Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU).

"New construction, renovation and needs-based expansion will allow traffic in North Rhine-Westphalia to flow better in the future."

Then most of the drivers benefited from the investments in the infrastructure.
