Berlin (dpa / bb) - The police will be on New Year's Eve in Berlin with a large contingent.

A spokeswoman for the Berlin police said on Tuesday that up to 2,900 additional workers would enforce the fireworks ban that applies in many places from the afternoon to the night.

Accordingly, there are also 600 officers from other federal states among the 2900 police officers.

The ignition of firecrackers remains prohibited in many places in Berlin.

Last week the Senate published a list of 56 places where this will be the case.

These include large squares and sights such as Potsdamer Platz, Breitscheidplatz and the Brandenburg Gate.

Staying in these places is also prohibited.

In addition, in the capital - as everywhere else - there is a strict ban on the sale of fireworks.

As in previous years, the Berlin fire brigade is preparing for a kind of state of emergency on New Year's Eve.

A total of around 850 people from the professional fire brigade are to be deployed as well as more than 520 volunteers from the volunteer fire brigades.

In addition, there would be around 120 emergency services from the Bundeswehr and the technical relief organization.
