French couturier Pierre Cardin, visionary stylist and ready-to-wear pioneer, died Tuesday at the age of 98, his family told AFP.

Son of Italian immigrants who became a businessman with a world-famous name, Pierre Cardin died in the morning at the American hospital in Neuilly, in the west of Paris.

"The perpetual secretary, Laurent Petitgirard, and the members of the Academy of Fine Arts are very sad to announce the disappearance of their colleague Pierre Cardin", indicates the academy on his Twitter account.

Born in Italy in July 1922, he had been one of the figures of futuristic fashion, first in ready-to-wear, of which he was one of the pioneers, then in haute couture.

A shrewd businessman, he had multiplied the franchise contracts of his name, which became a trademark.
