The Libyan Interior Ministry said that senior Egyptian security officials visited the Libyan capital, Tripoli, on Sunday for the first time in years, and held talks with officials from the internationally recognized Government of National Accord.

This is the first time that senior Egyptian officials have visited Tripoli since 2014, when Libya entered a war between the internationally recognized Government of National Accord and the forces of retired Major General Khalifa Haftar.

The following are the most prominent milestones in the relationship between Cairo and Tripoli since 2012.

January 16, 2012

Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, head of the Supreme Council of the Egyptian Armed Forces, visits Tripoli after taking office in the wake of the January Revolution.

February 16, 2015

Egyptian warplanes carried out air strikes on the city of Derna in mid-February 2015, after ISIS released a video clip of the execution of 21 Egyptian Christians.

29 October 2017

In late October of 2017, Cairo hosted meetings under the slogan of unifying the military establishment, attended by representatives of the Accord Forces and the forces of retired Major General Khalifa Haftar.

20 May 2020

In May 2020, al-Wefaq's volcano operation forces announced that they had taken control of Egyptian weapons and ammunition that Haftar's forces had in the battles south of Tripoli.

6 June 2020

Less than a month later, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi announced an Egyptian initiative for a ceasefire between the two parties to the Libyan crisis.

20 June 2020

The Egyptian Parliament agreed to send food to Libya.

16 July 2020

The Egyptian role continued in mid-July by hosting a conference of sheikhs and elders of tribes loyal to Haftar.

11 October 2020

Cairo also hosted, in October 2020, representatives of the House of Representatives and the Supreme Council of State within the constitutional process sponsored by the United Nations.

14 November 2020

The Interior Minister of the National Accord Government, Fathi Bashagha, will visit Cairo in mid-November, in the first of its kind, after the failure of Haftar's attack on the capital.

27 December 2020

On December 27, an Egyptian delegation arrived in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, and met with a number of political leaders.
