The Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai has revealed that it is currently working on a project that will raise the level of safety in passenger transport operations through the fleet of taxis in the "Dubai Taxi Corporation" of the authority, by converting the process of opening and closing vehicle doors into an intelligent automatic system that monitors the presence of the passenger to open him. The door is automatic, preventing it from touching the handle on one side, and welcoming it on the other side.

She stated that the application of the technology will ensure the cleanliness of the door handle by canceling contact, and also working to enhance safety and security standards by closing doors through an advanced system that senses the presence of people inside and outside the vehicle.

The executive director of the Dubai Taxi Corporation at the authority, Dr. Yusuf Al Ali, told «Emirates Today», that «the application of the project meets the requirements imposed by the Corona pandemic on taxi operators in the world.

It also comes within the development plans of the institution to upgrade the taxi sector, which necessitated changing the method of managing and operating vehicle fleets in line with the needs of customers in light of the health conditions resulting from the spread of (Covid-19) ».

He added that «the specialists in the sector stressed the need to devise new methods and mechanisms that enhance the safety of passenger transport in order to raise the level of confidence in the service, by applying the best and latest technologies in this field».

He added that “the focus is currently on the necessity to change taxi vehicle specifications in the next phase,” pointing out that “this does not only mean the change related to the sustainability component and the use of electric vehicles in transportation, but also on the specifications and details of the vehicle itself to meet the transportation challenges in the time of Corona, Among the most important of these is the way to automatically open the door of the taxi, using sensor technology and sensors .. As soon as a person is detected in front of the door, it opens automatically, without anyone touching it.

He stated that the new technology helps in two issues, the first is to limit contact in the presence of a large number of people opening and closing the door throughout the day, which prevents contact, reduces the risk of transmitting the virus infection, and the passenger feels confident.

He added that the second issue is related to the role of technology in providing service in a way that reflects the customs and culture of Dubai and the Emirates.

Al Ali pointed out that the project, which is still in the experimental stage in preparation for its implementation during the next year, is applied in some countries, such as Japan, because it also simulates the culture of welcome that the Japanese focus on in their dealings, especially when providing various services.

He added that one of the duties of the driver is to rise and open the door to the guest traveling as we do when we receive our guests at home, and as the driver does in Japan, where he gets off and nods, according to the Japanese culture to welcome the guest.

He stressed that «the institution wants to reflect the culture of the country, and the passenger feels that it is welcomed, because the guest is received at the door, in the Emirati and Arab culture, and accompanied when leaving until it reaches the gate to the outside also».

It is noteworthy that the Dubai Taxi Corporation had started since the first months of the outbreak of the pandemic by using the self-sterilization corridor in front of the drivers ’housing in the Muhaisnah area, with the aim of preventing them and protecting them from the Corona virus after completing their daily work, and within the application of the precautionary measures that the corporation follows to preserve the safety of drivers and taxi users .

The corridor is characterized by the ability to sterilize the driver's clothes from the outside, by spraying the sterile material 360 degrees around the perimeter of the body before entering the residence, in addition to other precautionary measures taken, such as logging in and out of the residence without touching through smart cameras that recognize the faces of the authorized individuals.
