Hofheim am Taunus (dpa) - Because of a wrong-way driver, two cars collided on Autobahn 66 on Christmas Eve and initially three people were seriously injured - the 84-year-old who caused the accident later died in hospital.

The man had driven in the wrong direction on the highway for an unexplained cause, as the police announced on Thursday evening.

The senior's car then collided with another car between the Wiesbaden motorway junction and the Diedenbergen exit (Main-Taunus-Kreis).

The 84-year-old, as well as the 70-year-old driver in the other car and his 71-year-old co-driver came to nearby hospitals with serious injuries.

The 84-year-old died of his injuries that night, the police said.

The motorway was blocked for around three hours in the direction of Frankfurt.

It was unclear in the evening where the wrong-way driver hit the highway and how long he was on the highway, as a police spokeswoman said in the evening.
