Grimma (dpa) - The first case of avian influenza in a company has been confirmed in Saxony.

A poultry farm in the district of Leipziger Land is affected.

"All animal owners must now adhere to the regulations in order to prevent the spread of bird plague," said the Saxon Minister of Health Petra Köpping (SPD).

"It is very challenging that, after the corona pandemic and African swine fever, we are now facing the third crisis with avian influenza."

According to the Ministry of Health, the veterinary authorities immediately blocked the animal population.

The killing and disposal of the animals had been initiated, it said.

It was unclear how many animals were affected.

Avian influenza has been found in northern Germany for several weeks not only in wild birds but also in numerous livestock populations.

In Saxony, only one wild bird in the northern Saxony district had tested positive so far.
