Hilders (dpa / lhe) - The fire brigade rescued three escaped horses in Hilders (Fulda district) from a large mud hole.

Passers-by had discovered the animals, which were stuck up to the torso, on Friday morning, the police said.

They had previously broken out of a nearby paddock with several other horses.

The three ran into a very soggy meadow and finally got into the hole.

A total of 40 emergency services arrived.

With considerable physical effort, they managed to free the animals from their predicament.

The horses were not harmed.
