Erfurt (dpa / th) - Thuringia's state capital has had to pay penalty interest on bank balances in the past two years, according to the state government.

Erfurt paid around 116,000 euros in 2018 and around 59,000 euros in 2019.

This emerges from a response from the Ministry of the Interior to a small request from the left-wing state parliament members Sascha Bilay and Ralf Plötner.

These fines were incurred for investments of around 6.2 million euros and around 9 million euros, respectively.

According to the ministry, other Thuringian municipalities also had to pay penalty interest in these two years.

Sometimes it was a few hundred euros, sometimes five-digit sums.

Like private savers, municipalities have also had a hard time getting interest on overnight and fixed-term deposit accounts or similar investments at credit institutions for years. Instead, they now regularly have to pay penalty interest if their investments in banks or savings banks exceed a certain level.
