Addis Ababa (dpa) - According to authorities, 207 people were killed in the massacre in western Ethiopia on Wednesday.

This was announced by the Bulen district in the Benishangul-Gumuz region and, according to its own information, relied on information from a base of the Ethiopian armed forces.

The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission and Amnesty International had previously spoken of more than 100 deaths.

According to Amnesty, armed people attacked members of the Amhara, Oromo and Shinasha communities in the region on Wednesday.

According to this, there have been repeated attacks against these population groups in the region in recent months.

After the attack, around 42 armed men who were alleged to be behind the attack were killed by the armed forces, the government of the Benishangul-Gumuz region announced.

In the multiethnic state of Ethiopia with its around 112 million inhabitants, there is a lot of tension between population groups.

They have increased under Abiy Ahmed, who has been in power since 2018.

There is currently a conflict in the northern region of Tigray between the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), which was in power there, and the central government in Addis Ababa.
