Twitter said on Tuesday that it would not automatically transfer millions of subscribers from official Trump administration accounts to the Biden administration, leaving that choice to users.

This decision concerns people following accounts managed by the US government such as @WhiteHouse (White House account) and @POTUS (President of the United States, President of the United States, editor's note), which will be transferred when the Democrat Joe Biden will take the presidency in January.

However, it will not affect Donald Trump's personal account @realDonaldTrump, which is frequently used by the Republican president and has some 88 million subscribers.

Official government accounts "will not automatically keep their existing subscribers," the social network said in a statement.

End of special treatment for Donald Trump

"Twitter will notify the subscribers of these accounts of the change of context as well as the fact that the content will be archived and allow them to choose to follow the new accounts of the Biden administration", adds the text.

"For example, people who follow @ WhiteHouse will be notified that the account has been archived as @ WhiteHouse45 (45 for 45th president) and will have the option to follow the new @ WhiteHouse account," the famous social network also explained.

Twitter is working on the transition of the platform that has been widely used by Donald Trump.

While not as followed as Donald Trump's personal account, @POTUS has some 33 million followers and @WhiteHouse 26 million.

The transfer will also affect other institutional accounts such as @VP, @FLOTUS, @PressSec, @Cabinet and @LaCasaBlanca, according to Twitter.

Last month, he indicated that any special treatment Donald Trump had received would end with his presidency.

“Twitter's approach to world leaders, candidates and officials is based on the premise that people should be able to choose to see what their leaders say in clear context,” the San Francisco-based company explained.

"This political framework applies to current leaders around the world, to candidates for office, and not to private citizens when they no longer hold these positions," she added.
