Ahlhorn (dpa / lni) - The carp likes to be on the table at Christmas and New Year's Eve in northern Germany.

The Corona crisis had no impact on sales in Lower Saxony, the Chamber of Agriculture said.

"The direct marketers are doing very well, although I can't distinguish between carp and salmon trout," said Christina Hiegel, Head of the Fisheries Department.

"That is a ray of hope, people want to treat themselves to something good."

Ahlhorn's pond management in the Oldenburg district is one of the largest carp farms in Lower Saxony.

It is operated by the state forest and confirms the good sales.

«All hell is going on here.

Because the catering is closed, private individuals come to us, ”reports fish management master Friedrich von Heydebrand.

The state-owned company has been breeding fish on 120 hectares for more than 100 years.

“Salmon trout and trout, whether smoked or fresh, are particularly popular,” says Heydebrand.

Carp has gone a little out of fashion with young people in northwest Germany.

In return, newcomers from Asia and Eastern Europe were interested in the food fish.

"Personally, I think blue carp is boring, but there are great recipes like the Chinese preparation of steaming with soy sauce and dill, that's something completely different."

The carp season runs from September to April.

However, one of the most important months for nationwide sales is December, because carp is traditionally served in many regions at Christmas and around the turn of the year.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, around 4600 tons of carp were bred across Germany in 2019, with Bavaria and Saxony leading by a large margin.

After the rainbow trout, the common carp is still the most important fish from aquaculture in Germany.

The amount generated has been at a similar level since 2015.
