Hamburg (dpa / lno) - Mayor Peter Tschentscher thanked all Hamburgers who help overcome the corona pandemic and keep the city going.

At the same time, in his Christmas address, which was broadcast on the Internet on Wednesday, he appealed to people to avoid contact as far as possible over the holidays.

Corona has shown "that we stand together in Hamburg and help those who are in need during the crisis," said the SPD politician.

In view of the vaccine that is now available, he was confident that after Corona the city will look again like we know it: lively, economically strong, a diverse cultural landscape, clubs, restaurants, events every day with many personal and interesting encounters ».

It will take a while before the pandemic is finally over.

"We still need patience, discipline and responsibility," said the mayor.

"I therefore ask you to keep to the rules, wear masks, keep your distance and avoid contact with others as much as possible, even over Christmas and New Year's Eve."

He and his wife would also spend Christmas at home for the first time in many years - "without visitors, but in the happy, festive mood associated with the Christian Christmas message."
