Despite all the losses and restrictions caused by the corona pandemic, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier sees cause for hope.

“Yes, we have every reason to be confident,” said Steinmeier in his Christmas address.

Vaccines have been approved since this week, and vaccinations will start the day after tomorrow.

This Christmas is also a festival of hope, said Steinmeier.

The head of state thanked the citizens for the privations in the corona pandemic.

The vast majority of the people in the country behaved considerately and show solidarity.

He admitted: “There is still a long, arduous road ahead of us.

But we see the long-awaited light at the end of the tunnel getting brighter. "One will now come closer to the exit from the crisis" step by step.

In addition to the many dark ones, one shouldn't forget the light sides of this year, said Steinmeier.

The country is strong "because so many people are there for others and rise above themselves in the crisis".

The Federal President thanked those "who are in the front row in the fight against the virus" and named doctors, nurses, educators, scientists and bus drivers as examples.

At the same time, Steinmeier called for solidarity with the younger generation.

"The pandemic has thwarted many young people, young people who want to enter the job, start training or study," he said.

One now has to ensure that they can set off into a better future.

The Federal President underlined: "In a time of uncertainty we have learned that we can trust our democracy." Those who denied the danger of the virus are often particularly loud.

"But the sensible are the vast majority." That is the good news this year.

"And that's why this Christmas is also a festival of hope!" Said Steinmeier.

“Most of the people in our country act with consideration and solidarity - not because the state orders them to, but out of reason, compassion and responsibility.

I hope that we will take this civic spirit with us into the coming year. "
