Essen (AP) - After the cup surprise from Rot-Weiss Essen, the Christmas parties of the player families are in danger.

The former Bundesliga club's first entry into a round of 16 of the DFB Cup in twelve years ended in a team party that was to last for a long time.

«I told the boys to sign out at home.

Christmas will be celebrated a little later, ”said Essen's success coach Christian Neidhart after the fourth division's 3-2 (2-1) coup against Bundesliga relegated Fortuna Düsseldorf on Sky.

“Somehow I have to come home tomorrow.

Of course there is still something to be celebrated, ”joked Marco Kehl-Gomez, the captain and goalscorer to make it 2-1 (39th minute).

"We wanted to win today and you saw that."

The traditional club from the area ended 2020 without a single defeat this season.

The leaders of the Regionalliga West, who were still unbeaten in 20 league games, had already eliminated Bundesliga club Arminia Bielefeld (1-0) in the first round of the cup.

Now RWE is again hoping for a feasible lot for the round of 16.

"Preferably someone you can beat," said Simon Engelmann, who made it 1-0 (15th).

For the fifth in the second division, two goals by Rouwen Hennings (36th / 87th, penalty kick) were too few because the substitute Oguzhan Kefkir (70th) had previously exploited a counterattack in the second half.

In general, the chances exploitation of the Essenes was almost perfect: The only real scoring chances led to goals.

As in the previous season, Fortuna failed because of a fourth division.

In March, Fortuna, as a Bundesliga team, lost the quarter-finals at 1. FC Saarbrücken after a penalty shoot-out.

In Essen, Fortuna was playfully stronger from the start, but had a hard time in front of goal.

The self-confident Essenes, who were also lucky, were completely different.

Striker Engelmann took advantage of a bad mistake by Düsseldorf's substitute keeper Raphael Wolf early on.

RWE hit back just three minutes after Hennings' well-deserved compensation: Kehl-Gomez exploited a coordination problem in the Fortuna defense and headed the ball into the net.

In the second round, Fortuna labored as laboriously as in vain.

A counterattack by the German champions from 1955 was enough for the decision.

More than a converted foul penalty by Hennings was no longer possible for the guests.
