Nuremberg (dpa / lby) - Smugglers have tried to smuggle hundreds of thousands of cigarettes past customs by post, intricately wrapped in insulating material from wall parts.

"Even by drilling into the insulation, the cigarettes could not have been discovered," said a spokesman for the main customs office in Nuremberg on Tuesday.

The investigators suspiciously dismantled the wall elements when they checked a parcel shipping center in Nuremberg at the beginning of the month and found the 241,000 cigarettes.

During operations in parcel dispatch centers, the officers found another 22,500 cigarettes packed in cardboard boxes.

The two finds prevented a tax loss of 50,000 euros.

In addition, the customs investigators seized more than 2,000 counterfeit fashion items as well as over 40 consignments with fireworks from a sender in Eastern Europe - a total of over half a ton.
