Russian President Vladimir Putin wrote on Tuesday during a change in the law that gives former presidents immunity from prosecution for life. The immunity also includes family members of previous presidents, writes TT.

Can only be revoked in the case of very serious crimes

The immunity means that neither Putin nor his family can be questioned by the police, be investigated, detained or prosecuted.

Immunity can only be lifted if the person is suspected of treason or other very serious crimes and that these suspicions can be substantiated by the country's highest courts.

Earlier legislative changes enable Putin's presidency by 2036

The change in the law is part of a radical change in Russia's political system that went through earlier this year, which also gives Putin the opportunity to remain in power until 2036 instead of until 2024, when his current term expires.
