Stralsund (dpa / mv) - The association of museums with the most visitors in the northeast, the Deutsches Meeresmuseum Foundation (Stralsund), was able to completely make up for its million deficit caused by the Corona crisis in 2020.

As spokespersons for the city and the foundation explained in Stralsund on Tuesday, around five million euros were raised from various sources with the help of the federal and state governments.

Diana Meyen, spokeswoman for the foundation, said that the financial gap, which was mainly caused by a lack of visitors, was closed.

The Ozeaneum and the other institutions of the foundation had only 393,000 visitors in 2020 due to closing times and hygiene regulations.

That corresponded to about 50 percent of the previous year's values.

Many museums had a large number of visitors in the summer due to the large number of domestic tourists, but could only let a few visitors in at the same time because of the hygiene measures.

The federal government contributed almost two million euros of the aid, another two million came from several sources in the state and almost one million euros was taken over by the city.

The Museum Foundation also includes the Marine Museum, which is to be renovated anyway for around 20 million euros in 2021, the Museum of Fisheries and Marine Research on Kleiner Dänholm - also known as the Nautineum - and the Natureum at the Darßer Ort lighthouse.

Despite the closing times, there were costs for animal feed and care.
