Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) - Because of the corona pandemic, the amount of waste in Frankfurt has grown significantly this year.

The environmental department of the city of Frankfurt announced on Tuesday that there was more bulky waste, glass, organic waste and packaging.

Up to three times more visitors were counted at the recycling centers.

For bulky waste, for example, the city recorded 20,177 tons between the start of the pandemic in March and November, an increase of 15 percent compared to the previous year.

According to the department, the reason for this is that many Frankfurters used the time during the corona pandemic to set up or renovate.

Likewise, more hazardous waste was disposed of via the mobile hazardous substance vehicle or via the stationary pollutant collections at the recycling centers, including sprays, paints and varnishes.

The larger quantities of glass between March and November (11,206 tons, plus 11 percent) could be attributed to the closure of the catering trade, said a spokeswoman.

Because of the closed restaurants and pubs, drinks were mostly drunk in private rooms or in the city's green spaces.

With 22,832 tons, the amount of bio-waste also increased by eight percent.

“Of course, people also ate and cooked more at home,” explained Frankfurt's environment officer, Rosemarie Heilig (Greens).

Since more food was ordered and more people were shopping online, the amount of packaging in the yellow bin increased by five percent to 10,939 tons between March and November.

The end of the year could be a little quieter for the city cleaners.

The reason for this are the renewed closings, contact restrictions and the ban on the sale of fireworks.

According to information from Frankfurter Entsorgungs- und Service GmbH, an average of around 20 tons of New Year's Eve rubbish has been produced in recent years.
