China News Service, Beijing, December 22 (Li Hanxue) The recently passed away Harvard University professor Emeritus Fu Gaoyi, a well-known American scholar on China issues, said in an exclusive interview with Taiwan's "Foresight" magazine in October this year that the leaders of the Taiwan region "have to face cross-strait issues" very careful".

Professor He Sishen, Director of the Center for Japan and East Asian Studies at Fu Jen Catholic University, Taiwan, said on the 22nd that this is a good-faith suggestion based on an understanding of cross-strait issues.

Fu Gaoyi is a rare American scholar who is familiar with both China and Japan.

In a telephone interview with a reporter from China News Agency, He Sishen recalled that when he was still studying in the Japanese department in the 1980s, Fu Gaoyi's "Japan No. 1" was almost a must-read for students.

"China and Japan: 1500 Years of Exchange History" written by Fu Gaoyi in his later years also caused great repercussions in Taiwan's publishing industry.

His research on China's reform and opening up has historical depth, which is rare in American academic circles today.

He Sishen said that Fu Gaoyi is familiar with China and Japan, and as an American scholar, he very much hopes to promote the correct understanding of China, Japan, and even East Asia in the United States, and properly handle East Asian issues.

"I think he was kind," He Sishen said. This kind of goodwill is precious in the current situation where Sino-US relations are in a trough.

In October this year, Fu Gaoyi mentioned in an interview with "Foresight" magazine that in order to avoid conflicts in the Taiwan Strait, Taiwan must respond cautiously; Tsai Ing-wen "must be very careful" not to believe in the unilateral voice of the United States, and to listen to all messages released by Beijing at the same time. Lead Taiwan in the right direction.

In this regard, He Sishen believes that Fu Gaoyi understands the crux of the cross-strait issue and this is a kind reminder he made like an elder.

He Sishen said that in recent years, the DPP authorities have almost adopted a policy of "leaving one side" to the United States.

Especially two years after Trump took office as US president, the Taiwan authorities' "pro-US and anti-China" policy has intensified.

Such an attempt to rely on the United States to preserve Taiwan’s interests is quite dangerous.

He Sishen said that Fu Gaoyi certainly did not want the peace situation in East Asia that was gradually established after World War II to be destroyed.

If the United States blindly seeks out external enemies, it will not only fail to solve its domestic problems, it may even drag the entire East Asia into the water.

There is also a need for dialogue and mutual understanding between the two sides of the strait. It would be unpragmatic for Taiwan to blindly "say no" to Beijing's message without thinking.

He Sishen also pointed out that in recent years, both Taiwan and the United States have seen populist forces on the rise. This will suppress the rational space for policy, and we must be vigilant.

He believes that the "goodwill" conveyed by Fu Gaoyi is a legacy that all parties should value now.

Only by listening and communicating in good faith can we break self-righteous stereotypes.
